The impact of hormonal changes during menopause can have a more profound effect on mental health than is represented in the media and general health promotion literature.

Estrogen has direct effects on several receptors in the brain that modulate neurotransmitter function. Fluctuations in this hormone can result in fluctuating levels of important chemicals in the brain that modulate mood.

Estrogen also plays a role in metabolism and the regulation of satiety and appetite. As these levels fluctuate and eventually decline through menopause this can increase the risk of triggering or developing an eating disorder (anorexia,binge eating or bulimia). .

Mental and emotional well being is just one of the areas in which naturopathic medicine can help with the transition through menopause.

According to Canadian guidelines, exercise is considered a first-line therapy for those who struggle with mild-moderate depression. Australia and New Zealand have taken it further, and recommend sedentary patients with depression try regular exercise before they are prescribed a medication or psychotherapy.

Research has shown that regular running overtime produces changes in the brain. It increases levels of serotonin + noradrenaline (two important neurotransmitters that impact our mood). Running was also found to stimulate the formation of new brain cells in the hippocampus, a region of the brain often found to be shrunken in those who suffer from depression.

🌱✨ Rebranding & Expanding: As many of you know, I have spent the last year filling my weekends with as much learning as I possibly could to be able to offer more and more valuable services! 💛 In a month I will be swapping spaces with my neighbour (same address) to create an integrated clinic. EASTND has a vision to create a truly integrated feel, with practitioners working on cases together and always inter-referring where seen appropriate. 💉The expansion will also include vitamin shots and IV drips run by nurses to make supplementation 10x more convenient for those so inclined.💊

This change also means we are hiring! We are currently seeking an additional dietitian, an acupuncturist, a counsellor, and an additional naturopathic doctor. . . Please share and tag if you know someone who might be interested.
EASTND is a name that both, soon to be ND @csleduc, and I feel reflects our roots 🌱and gives the opportunity to bring the Naturopathic clinic to Charlottetown in a year or so!! Celine and I, being just a couple years apart during most of our education have shared a dream of working together when we, so conveniently, chose the same career path. We spent our university years playing competitive basketball 🏀 together in Halifax, and then I spent just a year and half in Toronto without her before she joined Nat Med school with me. Returning back east was a big decision for both us, as at one point I was drawn to stay in Toronto and she was being pulled to the North (like way North). Originally from the island (and now, plans to get back there 🌴) Celine will be joining our clinic at the end of May 2018! We believe this integration will allow us to offer much needed natural services to both New Brunswick, and PEI when the time comes. . .
